a hospital owned by an order of nuns that also owns a local brewery.

They wouldn't, by chance, be the "Blue Nuns", would they?

Been trying to figure out where their winery is hidden...<VBG>

But as for church-owned businesses, there has always been a long history of it in the Catholic church... There were the Templar Knights who rose to essentially the bankers to kings in the 12-13th century, the Mormons with Deseret Industries and Pepsi Cola, the Scientologists with who knows what....

I agree with you that it is a difficult issue and lacking any deep understanding of the laws involved, I find myself siding with you on this (except for those nuns.. :0)

The main thing in my perspective is that any profits are completely channeled back into church operations and charitable work...

Because EVEN if you don't permit them to claim tax-exempt status in their business operations, then they would still be donating any profits to their missions and churches anyway, thus effectively taking it as a charitable donation anyway.

Btw, many universities ALSO exist as a tax-exempt entities DESPITE the fact that they engage in research, selling books, selling concessions, and operating as land-lords...

Regards,

Ron
