That is a good story especially about the infidel/Christian dichotomy. This is why I think it is wrong to ridicule people's belief - it causes harm. If they want to discuss the merits of their philosophy, then I don't feel the obligation to lie to them, but I would never go to their home uninvited and proselytize.

Many people want to be comfortable in their illusions. Taking it does nothing for them or the people taking it. This was how I ended up supporting only personal philosophies. A personal philosophy is unambiguous in the adherent's identity and responsibility.

There is some undeniable comfort in knowing that others feel the same way, but group philosophies tend to obviate personal identity and responsibility. The adherents end up finding the philosophy more important than personal expression of that philosophy.

My position is essentially, "Believe anything you want until you act on others." Then you better have a reason for acting and be prepared to justify it. Justify it well.
