Quasar.. I was referring to the relationship between church and state.

Historically, the church has been tax exempt even in Europe, for fear that ruler would be able to subjugate priests and clerics to the king's will.

That is certainly a carry over from the founding of this nation.... And despite it's problems, permitting taxation of religious faiths poses even greater ones.
