A thread set up for the express purpose of debating a particular set of values is, of course, a different set of circumstances.

Absolutely. You aren't hunting people down to shake them of their beliefs, are you? Being vocal here is fine. Being vocal at a dinner party is fine, but possibly unadvisable. It isn't okay to stop people at random or in their churches and accost them. I wouldn't even support picketing except on specific issues. Most people want to be left alone. I do and I resent Jehovah's Witnesses coming to my door and arguing with me about the meaning of my "No Soliciting" sign.

The very next words out (after the ones you quoted) were "If they want to discuss the merits of their philosophy, then I don't feel the obligation to lie to them, but I would never go to their home uninvited and proselytize."

There is, IMO, an implied consent to have one's ideas examined if they wish to discuss their religion with me (especially in this forum or in front of my "No Soliciting" sign). I don't feel that one must don kid gloves except where the situation prevents a hasty retreat on my part or theirs.
