VIA chipset info

"KM133:

The KM133 chipset is very much anticipated in the market. It has the same features as the PM/PL133 but for the AMD Duron/Athlon processor. This should finally help the AMD Duron make its way into more low end machines. VIA pushed the PM133 chipset to the market first to directly compete with Intel, this is causing the delay in the KM133 chipset. Most motherboard manufacturers have displayed motherboards around this chipset. The Duron/KM133 combo should handily outperform a similar PM133/Celeron system and cost less too. This will be very appealing for OEMs and system builders.

VIA informed us as well that we can expect to see a KL133 chipset which is similar to the KM133 with the exception of the AGP4x slot.

VIA PLE133/KLE133

The PLE133/KLE133 chipset is something I actually was unaware of before I went into the VIA room. They are a SMA chipset similar to the PM/KM133 but instead of the S3 graphics they contain an integrated Trident Blade3D, similar to what is found in the VIA MVP3/4 chipset. I asked VIA why they would introduce a new chipset around the Trident graphics when they had already purchased S3 graphics? They told me the PLE/KLE133 chipsets would be for the ultra low end systems, lower then the PM/KM133. I don't think this is necessarily a smart move for VIA, but interesting nevertheless. They also told me that now VIA has a three pronged attack against Intel's SMA lineup.

VIA Motherboards not seen at Comdex:

From the products I saw and played with today, nothing was too much of a shocker. I was a bit disappointed to not find out any information about a VIA Pentium 4 chipset, I did see a P4 in action. MSI had a P4 on an Intel 850 Pro chipset running Quake 3.

Also there was no sign of a VIA AMD DDR chipset anywhere. This continues VIA's plans of always pushing their Intel chipsets first. Another thing I didn't see at VIA's room was any sign of the VIA KT133 A chipset. The "A" adds the 133/266 Front Side Bus while still using PC133 memory. MSI however had a VIA KT133 A motherboard on display. The K7T Turbo features the KT133 A chipset along with the VIA 686b southbridge, six PCI slots, and RAID."

No need to comment on how far behind VIA STILL is.

Petz and all, does VIA's next processor look to be a good low-end contendor next year? I saw something about 1.2GHz at JC's site, but Centaur and NSM/Cyrix X86 processors have been all hype and no substance well over the past year. Is this new processor something to keep an eye on? I wouldn't be surprised if a Duron 800 is faster than a 1.2GHz VIA whatever. Good thing AMD will have SiS making low-end chipsets next year!
