It depends on how good their marketing department feels they are. With the right benchmarks, Intel could position the P4 to overlap the performance range of the Athlon, and exceed it. The PIII would overlap on the bottom, but since it is scheduled to move to 0.13 micron first, it will have a a tiny die, maybe 45mm^2, so it should be cheap. Remember that the roadmap on Ace's show Tulatin only having a 256k L2 cache.

Now for this to work, Intel will have to move Tulatin up, and I have some questions whether that can happen. But I can come up with no other reason why a 1.3GHz P4 exists. Intel has got to be planning a "Celeron Squeeze" on AMD.
