NEW PAD FOR JO’BURG’S PRIDE - AngloGold Lion Enclosure Launched Today

Date: Wednesday, November 15, 2000

AngloGold CEO, Bobby Godsell, today officially opened the R7,2 million AngloGold lion enclosure, the new home for Johannesburg Zoo’s three families of tawny and white lions.

The new enclosure boasts three camps, separated from each other and the public by attractive moats rather than fences or walls. Water and landscaping features provide the lions with shade, privacy and variety; and inside accommodation includes specially designed night rooms and cubbing areas.

“The enclosure is a gift to the people of Johannesburg – South Africa’s own city of gold,” said Godsell.

“Though AngloGold operates across four continents, it is first and foremost a South African company, with its primary listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. This sponsorship symbolises AngloGold’s commitment to both the city and the people that have supported South Africa’s gold industry for more than a century.

“We are proud to assist the Zoo’s efforts to secure the future of the unique gene pool of the white lions of Timbavati, at the same time affording the public unrivalled viewing access to these magnificent animals.”

To ensure that the enclosure is sustainable, AngloGold has built a boardroom facility, which the Zoo can let out for selective business functions, to generate sufficient funds to maintain the enclosure and further develop the white lion breeding programme. CEO of the Zoo, Thembi Mogoai, commented: “On behalf of my staff and all our beloved animals, more specifically the lion families, it is with song in our hearts that we thank AngloGold.
