The story of thousands of elderly people accidentally voting for Reform Party candidate Pat Buchanan instead of Gore makes for great television, but it is not likely to decide this race because a judge is not likely to order a new election. Democrats figured this out before Republicans did. By the time Bush strategists reached a similar conclusion, it was too late to seek hand counts in counties that might favor them -- counties such as Duval County, where at least 24,000 ballots likely will go uncounted.
