Sorry, but I have to get off the bus on this one. What humans have done to the Rhein River, the Hudson, the Mississippi, the Columbia, the Colorado, the Great Lakes (remember when Lake Erie caught fire) cannot be dismissed out of hand. A human population of 5-6 billion has a very real effect on the environment. We can, and are, overfishing and polluting the oceans.
When I hear people saying that CO2 production, particulate production, has and will have minimal effect on the climate, I feel the same way I feel when I hear Bill Daley talk about "protecting democracy." And what does it really matter whether the CO2 production results in a hothouse or a coldhouse? Robert Frost wrote a poem about that particular conundrum; you could look it up.
Totally in control? How about, totally out of control?
Maybe all the coal fires in China won't cause more global warming than one big Vesuvius style volcanic eruption, but the Chinese stuff goes on day in day out, as does the American driving, every week, month & year. Vesuvius we haven't heard from since 79 A.D., Chinese coal fires and L.A. smog put their input IN yesterday, and continue today.
Humans are an arrogant lot? Ya sure ya betcha. The most arrogant position of all is to think that one's individual choices, multiplied by 6 billion, couldn't possibly have an effect on spaceship earth. We are fouling our nest at an alarming rate.
