There's no way to confirm most of the votes since one would have to go through and collect all the confirmation slips if an election was in dispute. Paper ballots are already stored and can be re-checked for a recount. With safeguards, the integrity of the storage of the paper ballots can be verified as well. Not so with public handling of ballots outside the polling place.
