Bottom line we need the most powerful optical networking system we can build, as soon as possible, such technology is a critical to the optimal running the optical networking infrastructure of the 21 century. Why is running at optimal optical rates so important? I can think of many reasons. One that comes strongly to mind though, is how such an infrastructure could support a world wide simultainious group project to develope the fuel for the future, the fuel to replace oil. Such a global group effort could involve the simultainious hook up of every relevant research facility around the globe. These facilities as a cooperative group could weed through ideas, much faster than any single group, working on such a project. The computing power to quickly calculate the viability of different models and ideas could come from all the used computing power around the globe. We need to take technology to the next level fast, if we don't do this while we still have a sufficient supply of oil, it is going to be a much more painful transition.
