Highway Chase for Man in Wheelchair

Ft Lauderdale (Reuters) - Florida police were involved in a low-speed chase Tuesday after an elderly man in a wheelchair by the name of "GZ," inadvertently joined the frenetic I95 motorway circling Ft Lauderdale. ''We had a reports of a man in an electric wheelchair traveling between junctions 25 and 26, but he had got down to junction 27 by the time he was intercepted by the police,'' a police spokeswoman told Reuters.

Bemused motorists alerted police to the pensioner's plight on their mobile phones and he was finally intercepted when the battery that ran his vibrator and his wheelchair ran down.

When the police arrived, the man told them he was a member of the Floridian's Automobile Association and that his wheelchair was covered by his membership policy. The vibrator was promptly removed by police officer Nit-Wit and placed in his pocket as evidence.

``Strictly speaking his vehicle wasn't actually covered,'' AA spokeswoman Van Scoyac told Reuters.

``We do have a special breakdown package for people with electric wheelchairs, but he had normal AA roadside assistance coverage,'' he said.

``But because he was in such a vulnerable position on the hard shoulder of the motorway, a disabled driver in rush hour, we managed to get someone to come along and take the stupid Palm Beach voter home.''
