It is not a partisan issue. The EC was placed in
the constitution to protect small states from
the tyranny of unruly mobs in large states. To pass a
constitutional amendment you need 35 states. There are
more small states than large states. None of the small
states will go along with an amendment against their
interests. The other constitutional approach would
be a 2/3rd vote in House + Senate. Fat chance that
it will occur. All this EC talk is just rabble
rousing by Shrillary. Kind of interesting how
Dellinger, Prof. at the Duke Law School and former
Solicitor General and big Gore supporter, had
circulated a position paper defending the EC when
it was thought that Bush could win the national vote
but not the EC. Now the shoe is on the other foot
and the tune has changed.

McCain was not the favorite of Republicans, he was
the favorite of Democratic liberals. Liberals always
dream of elections where behind door number 1 you
have a big government liberal like Gore and behind
door number 2 you have a Nelson Rockefeller liberal,
and with door 3 they have a socialist type like
Nader. So, if the Dem candidate stinks too much, they
still get a liberal no matter what. The ideology of
freedom, limited government, and a decentralized
society needs to be represented. Now we have an
equilibrium: Socialism (Nader) Big Govt (Gore)
Limited Govt (Bush) and Minimal Govt (Browne).
