the market has never been as volatile as this year since the early 30's. and the volatility in e.g. 1932 was mainly due to the fact that almost every stock was reduced to penny stock status, which invites bigger percentage moves.
when the Nikkei collapsed in '90, it also became extra-ordinarily volatile. on some days there were moves of 1,500 points in the index.
