True, and the biggest windmill should be in front of James Baker's mouth. Just saw his latest press conference and what he is doing is extremely irresponsible and damaging, regardless of whether he makes any valid points. He is calling the entire process into question in a way that is designed to undermine public faith and confidence in both the people running the process and the safeguards in the process itself. Daley is not much better, calling into question on a constant basis the bias of the sec of state for Florida. No matter who wins out, there will be even more bitterness, partisanship and polarization as a result of these actions. The saddest thing is that it is extremely unlikely that either of these tactics will have any appreciable effect on the outcome of the process, only on the public's perception of it.

What makes it even more reprehensible, in my view, is that the care with which these words are crafted makes it clear that both sides are deliberately fanning flames and distorting the truth by carefully presenting only those facts which favor their position. If one of these candidates, or even their top aides, had the capacity to be real men or women and face the facts straight up and deal with the truth, we would all be better for it.

I suspect that the real truth is that many of the judges, election officials and others are honestly trying to do their best in the face of extreme pressures. I also suspect that the rulings that are made in this case will not be partisan rulings, regardless of the political leanings of the jurist who makes them. Even were they to be corrupt, it is not in the best interest of those judges to embarrass themselves intellectually and morally in front of the whole nation and their peers.

These people are not fit to lead. Where is campaign reform?

OK, I feel better now. Ed
