In fact, there were some cases reported where prospective voters were not allowed to vote. We don't know the details--whether the voter was not registered, whether the voter was registered in a different district, etc. In New York State, if a voter comes to a voting place and there is no card on hand showing the voter's signature, and no record that the voter is registered, the election law REQUIRES that the voter be given a paper ballot, known as an affidavit ballot. This ballot is not counted until election inspectors have determined that the voter was previously registered, albeit in a different district. But the point I'm making is that IF some voters were illegally turned away, that is a very serious violation of state and federal laws and warrants some investigation, especially if the number of voters who claim they were turned away is anywhere near the margin of victory.

Nobody should take the purity of the vote lightly. For the Republicans to attempt to stop a recount in a state where the person whose department controls election procedures is a political ally of Bush looks pretty bad. At least in New York State, we have a state Board of Elections composed of two Republican Commissioners and two Democratic Commissioners. If they split down party lines on a key issue, then it may be resolved in court. But at least both sides get a chance to comment. Maybe Florida ought to consider the system used in New York.
