Machines were brought in to SPEED things up. They are much faster than hand counting.

As for accuracy, machines are fanatics, they only "understand" black and white. Whenever there is a machine ballot count, a number of ballots are "tossed out" because the machine can't for whatever reason read the ballot. Most of these ballots are none the less still valid. Typically the number of thrown out ballots is less than the margin of victory, thus no recount is needed. In this case however, the error is larger than the margin of victory so a hand count should be used to verify the validity of "tossed out" ballots. If those ballots are good they need to be counted.

The market might be volatile because of the uncertainty. But I think in the end this will be a good learning experience for our country. We have a chance at this point in time to solve some, possibly serious, shortcomings in our democratic system at a time when there are no crises.
