Cinderella OT Politics,
You know, this is the most curious part about this election to me. People, like you, whom I find to be reasonable, thoughtful folks, holding a view that I could never, at least not with a straight face, espouse.
I understand how someone could vote for Algore, given everything that has gone on, the state of the economy, the successful hatchet job the press has done of trying to "Quayle-ize" George Bush, the power of the White House, the sycophancy of the press (who vote 85-90% Democrat), the immensely successful scare tactics with the elderly, and all the blunders of the Republicans in getting their message across.
I can understand it.
What I fail to comprehend is, when viewing the 2:30 a.m. railroading of the Palm Beach canvassing committee, the statements by Bill Daley about "protecting and preserving democracy" (from a Daley!?!?), the litigation maneuvering so as to simply recount 4 Democratic counties as many times as it will take to get it "right,"--what I fail to comprehend is how otherwise right thinking individuals look at this and say, basically, "No comment." Or, hey, it's just politics. Or, this doesn't trouble me at all. Or, what the heck, the Republicans would do the same thing (steal an election) if they could.
This is mysterious to me. I'm not looking for an answer or a debate, I'm simply expressing my surprise. I haven't heard everything Jim Baker has said, but what I have heard makes perfect sense to me. Perhaps my position is just as mysterious to the Democrats who espouse theirs. But I'd like to think that if Bush had brought in someone with a pedigree like Daley and attempted to recount 4 heavily Republican counties in an attempt to overturn 2 machine votes, that I would say, this is just a crock. |
