General Info:
Ran into an interesting problem today. My ex-wife's neighbor spent 8 hours over two days with HP's tech support. She asked me to take a look at it. Basically, when they turned the computer on a message popped up saying resource conflict, slot 1 & slot 2. Then in windows, they could not access their modem (PCI in slot 1). Slot 2 must have been a virtual PCI connector because the other physical slot was empty. Anyway, I pulled the modem out; booted into CMOS setup; had it reset the device configuration (resetting it with the modem in didn't work); saved the CMOS setting; and let it reboot into Windows before shutting it down and replacing the modem. Then everything worked.

The interesting thing is that they had installed AOL5 just before the problem happened. I say interesting because HP made them delete it and told them it would not help out with anything except the AOL4 that came with the machine. In fact, they lost everything that wasn't back up because HP had them restore the PC to its original condition with the recovery CD. Needless to say they were not a happy couple. I ended up installing AOL6 for them which was glitchy until I installed all the windows updates for Win98 (50 Meg over a 56K modem plus AOL would disconnect due to "inactivity" on any unattended large download). Afterwards, AOL6 seemed quite solid. (Although, I'd want to use it for more than an hour before I felt comfortable with that pronouncement). I suspect tech support is going to be a complete myth if these things get any more varied. And who buys a computer with the thought they can't upgrade any software over the course of a year and a half.

Overall, it made for a much more interesting day than the leaf raking I had planned.

Best,
steve
