Thanks for the Telcordia links, guys.
But OT, gotta disagree with some of what I hear here re: Florida.
Curious to hear the complaints about using manual recounts to verify the 'uncounted' ballots. GWB signed the law in Texas stating that manual recounts were to be preferred over machine. Connie Mack in FL was elected solely due to a manual recount, which overturned the machine count; other republicans in the state, too. So there is legal precedence in FL for preference for manual recounts.
BTW, they simply run all the ballots through the machines, then rerun those that didn't count the first time, and finally hand-count those that the machine flagged as 'uncountable.' So the 'hand count' does not really handle all the ballots, only perhaps 1% of them; and arbiters from both parties are present at the time of determination, not to mention the media.
My state uses punch cards, and I always have to tug and pull to get the damn chits out. Not surprising that when people are in a hurry they don't take the same care. Also not surprising that those who wanted second ballots, having spoiled the first, saw the lines, and lack of help, and said 'what does it matter?' and walked away. Of course, their votes cannot count, that is not in dispute at present.
What's the complaint with counting valid ballots? Whoever wins then, wins. 'nuff said.
Just another point of view. |
