First Non-Line-Of-Sight Wireless Modems Deliver High-Speed
Internet Access to Homes in Rural Alberta
WaveRider Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:WAVC - news; FRANKFURT:WVR.FSE), today announced it has successfully completed its first installation and deployment of its LMS3000 system, the newest addition to the company's Last Mile Solution® line of wireless Internet access products.
Platinum Communications Corporation of Calgary, Alberta has established wireless, 1 Mbps Internet connections to homes and small businesses in High River, Alberta using the prototype versions of WaveRider's LMS3000 wireless end-user modems.
The installation for Platinum Communications Corporation in High River marks the first phase of WaveRider's roll-out of the LMS3000. In December, WaveRider and Platinum will begin to deploy the LMS3000 network for more than one hundred residential and small business users in Okotoks, Alberta. In the first quarter of 2001, WaveRider will extend the distribution of its LMS3000 to additional customers in North America and international markets as part of the product introduction.

WaveRider's LMS3000 is a complete wireless network that enables communication from the Internet to end users without the need for wired service at any point in the network. The LMS3000 system consists of a Network Access Point (NAP) and a network of Communications Access Points (CAPs) that are installed on rooftops or towers throughout a Wireless Internet Service Provider's (WISP) service area. The WISP provides WaveRider LMS3000 end-user modems to business and residential customers to install in their home or office to enable communication between the modem and nearby CAP. The LMS3000 end user modem does not require line-of-sight with the CAP and provides Internet access at speeds up to 1 Mbps. The LMS3000 system operates in the 900 MHz license-exempt frequency band.
