Monty, RE: Yes, they think people who short a stock is like them and don't have sense enough to cover. Just because they don't know when to sell does not mean everyone is stupid. :-) Maybe the best thing about being an active short seller is that you acquire a discipline about your portfolio that a long only investor wouldn't have to acquire.
