RESEARCH ALERT-Applied Materials EPS views cut

NEW YORK, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Merrill Lynch analyst Brett
Hodess cut his earnings-per-share (EPS) outlook and price
target for semiconductor equipment maker Applied Materials Inc.
<AMAT.O> on Thursday.
Applied Materials reported fiscal fourth-quarter profits on
Wednesday that beat analysts' estimates as sales rose 81
percent. However, executives forecast first-quarter profits per
share below Wall Street estimates.
In a research note, Hodess wrote, "Industry barometer
reports a bright quarter, but forecasts cloudy skies ahead."
He cut his outlook for first-quarter EPS to 78 cemts from
79 cents. Hodesstrimmed his forecast for fiscal 2001 EPS to
$2.95 from $3.50.
The 12-month price target dropped to $55 from $76.
Applied Materials' shares closed at $42-3/4 on Wednesday.
