Give me a break. The Eisenhower administration had us in
at the level of one toenail, which is not a commitment.
Level heads could easily have walked away. Unfortunately
we have had a shortage of level heads in Washington.

Kennedy made the decision for real commitment by the US,
as in up to our waist (like in wading through swamps).
Johnson decided we needed a full body commitment, and did
we ever get it.

Edit: Actually we can thank the French for talking the
Ike into getting into their mess. That whole section of
the Asian continent was once a French colony.
