<ot>Hi Carl - 1st, there are constant references, implicit or blatant, in mass media in general and on SI in particular, about Mr Daley's being the son of the late Mayor Richard Daley. I think this is the worst kind of prejudice. This is the moral equivalence of "he is Jewish," "she is Arabic," or "he is a muslim." etc etc. I think we should judge the man by his action and not by the sin of his father ! This is a despicable attempt for character assassination. If one doesn't like Sec Daley, say so, point to his defects as one perceives them, but not his genealogy!
Regarding to chad, as I ve pointed out, I also abhor zealous interpretation. That said, as I ve also pointed out, this is worse than the good old key punches. The former is based on human effort while the latter is machine driven. If the front end is manual and the back end is mechanized, I think there is room for doubt. I ve not taken standardized tests for decades, but back in the old days, I believe tests like LSAT would be manually checked if they were rejected by OCR. So, I don't see a difference here. The important thing is to have a relative objective standard. Your fraud scenario really doesn't hold b/c there are observers from all sides, dems, reps and independents presence.
As far as PBians aere concerned. I do not know the details. In MA and NH, the Secretary of States [at that time] had to either go to court or persuade legislature to change. And of course, there is a matter of the budget. I am not trying to paint the FL Secretary of State and the Governor are some sort of a conspirator, but I think people are more inclined to "let the sleeping dog lie" So, PBians weren't a 100% at fault, even if one were to fault someone for the debacle.
As I ve stated time and again, I don't necessarily see this is an attempt for VP Gore to *steal* the campaign. Thinking in this manner has predisposed oneself to the very notion. If both sides want to be fair, manually recount all 67 counties with a stringent set of criteria.
