Gore is behind. Any action he takes to prolong the recount only gives him a chance to win. Neither candidate has taken an action that demonstrates character.

If Bush, who's ahead, demanded a recount, that would demonstrate character. If Gore was ahead and demanded a recount, that would demonstrate character.

But when the candidate who is behind requests a recount, that just demonstrates a desire to win. There's nothing wrong with that; elections are about winning. But don't mistake ambition for character.
