Iso: Just stumbled on this thread. Several stories in the national press -- eg the Times and the Post -- indicate that a growing number of pols on both sides of this mess are beginning to think that it might be better to lose. Kevin Phillps was the first pundit to articulate this position, to my knowledge. The logic is pretty simple: the bitterness fostered in this fight, combined with the splits in Congress, will make it virtually impossible for Bush or Gore to enact significant parts of their programs. Secondly, the softening economy may well slide into recession. Who needs this? the thinking goes. Better to be the white knights riding to the rescue in 2004. M2
