Nortel Networks, Datang in Strategic Cooperation to Provide
CDMA Solutions in China

BEIJING - Nortel Networks* [NSYE/TSE: NT] and Datang, one of China's
leading local telecommunications equipment vendors, announced the signing
of a long-term strategic cooperation agreement intended to accelerate the
availability of advanced Wireless Internet solutions in China.

Under terms of the strategic cooperation agreement, Nortel Networks and
Datang will work together to promote CDMA (code division multiple access)
products. Moving forward, the companies plan to work together to evolve
Datang's CDMA products to cdma2000*.

"The signing of this agreement marks the beginning of an all-round, mutually
beneficial strategic association with Nortel Networks,'' said Zhou Huan,
president, Datang. "I believe this joint effort will significantly advance the
development and deployment of mobile communications and the Wireless
Internet in China."

"This is a major milestone in bringing the high-performance Wireless Internet
to China," said Robert Mao, president and chief executive officer, Nortel
Networks China. "By working with Datang to bring our turnkey networking
solutions to China's wireless operators, we will be accelerating the growth of
local manufacturing in the country's cellular market segment as well as
furthering Nortel Networks commitment to help build a world-class
telecommunications industry in China."

Nortel Networks has a leadership position in all major 2G and 3G wireless
technologies, including GSM, GPRS, CDMA, 1XRTT and TDMA. BT Cellnet in
the UK and Airtel Movil and Xfera in Spain have selected Nortel Networks to
build their UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) networks. In
addition, working with Telstra in Australia, Nortel Networks recently completed
the world's first cdma2000 1XRTT data call over a live network.

By unifying its IP (Internet Protocol), optical and wireless networking
solutions, Nortel Networks is accelerating time-to-market and time-to-profit for
wireless operators looking to offer next-generation Wireless Internet services.
Nortel Networks has already demonstrated the fastest Wireless Internet in the
world, with wireless data transmissions at speeds more than 25 times faster
