For a more timely call: the good folks at Fechtor Detwiler are out this ay-em with a report that basically says low-tech optical products made by the likes of JDSU, that had been in tight supply, are starting to get low priced competition from Asian competitors that have excess capacity and have reverse-engineered some of the lower technology components that remain scare. Writes analyst Jim Coleman: "We are hearing of cases where major North American suppliers have walked away from opportunities that they have been supporting, rather than entertain a losing contract. In one recent example, a North American supplier walked away from a $20 million lithum niobate modulator opportunity rather than match Fujitsu's 'gave-away' price."
