Interesting arguement. We obviously disagree about the personhood of the fetus but your arguement goes beyond that because now you say government can't interfere with the family and a fetus if it is considered a person is obviously part of the mother's family.

In general I am against government interference in the family but I do not think that government should refrain from protecting family members from attacks on each other.
BTW do you think a 15 year old girl should have a right to an abortion if her parents (her family) does not want her to?

One of the unfortunate facts of human nature is that people think they know what other people ought to do and are willing to go to great lengths to make them do it. Imo we need to guard against these tendencies in ourselves and cultivate tolerance of all those wrong-headed other people.
I'll promise not to 'protect' your children against you if you'll allow me to conduct my family in my own way as well.

(who doesn't really have any children who need protecting from her, so you can rest easy <G>)

I agree that in general it is unfortunate that too many people try to force others to do what they think they should do. For most things people should be able to do pretty much what they want in my opinion. I do not think drugs or prostitution should be illegal for example, even though I have never taken any illegal drug or used the services of a prostitute. However I do not believe in total anarchy. I think government should preserve the peace and protect the rights of individuals. Sometimes to protect one person's rights you have to restrict the actions of someone else. I have a right to keep and bear arms but I don't have a right to hunt you down and kill you with a shotgun if I get angry about your posts. (I'm not angry or particuarly violent and have no intention of attacking you in any way, this disclaimer probably shouldn't be nessiary but some people take things the wrong way)

I don't have any children either. If we both did I would think you are right when you state the often the government interferes to much in how they are raised, but they would be seperate people from you or me and would have their own rights. I think in clear cases of abuse the government should intervene. I am not particuarly trusting of the government but in this situation they are probably the only orginization capable of interveneing. (Unless you are going to let other relatives, or aquaintinces take the children away when they see abuse, as bad as social serices can be I don't think it should be replaced by a vigilantee version of child protective services)
