Al Hunt Complains Gore Team Is Blowing It

You know you're in trouble when your side begins to complain that your team is fumbling the ball.

Witness Thursday's column by the Wall Street Journal's Al Hunt, who's seldom accused of subtlety when it comes to expressing his Democratic sympathies.

Hunt thinks Gore is blowing the election crisis propaganda war, mainly because of the people he's chosen to deliver his message.

"Personnel will not be a Gore forte," Hunt observes before asking, "Why hasn't someone given the hook to Jesse Jackson, with his phony claims of African-American disenfranchisement?"

Ditto for Harvard legal spinmeister Alan Dershowitz, whose obnoxious presence in the Florida proceedings makes the pro-Democrat columnist feel like "an atheist at a Notre Dame-Southern Methodist football game."

And Gore campaign manager Bill Daley? "To have the son of former mayor and Chicago Democratic boss Richard Daley as the front man in a ballot dispute is a gift to Republicans," Hunt says.

What about Warren Christopher, the man brought in by Team Gore to give the veep's election larceny the air of respectablitiy? "Chistopher brings superb legal judgment to the Gore side ... but his style is cadaverous," Hunt complains.

Make no mistake, the Journal's guardian of liberal opinion thinks Gore should win the election dispute on the merits. But it's telling that a party loyalist like Hunt is so unimpressed by the Gore players charged with accomplishing that task that he's begun to say so out loud.
