a lack of appreciable backlash
I've been wondering why the Republicans are playing this game down to the wire. I thought it was the Texas team bumbling, but that didn't explain James Baker.

So if 40% of the usual voting population will vote republican regardless of what they do, and the republicans can get 20% stirred up enough, they think that things might settle down with a majority in the GOP column?

One wrinkle in that plan is that this kind of publicity for an election may cause new voters in the next round. Do you think they will be evenly split? or do you think they will be stirred up enough to potentially settle in the republican tally? I suppose another couple of years of mud slinging is to be added into the picture too.
