Newt and Bob Livingston resigned to satisfy their own caucus, which would not tolerate scandal at such a sensitive time. Losing a few seats is nothing. In my state, the Democratic candidate running against Connie Morella, a moderate Republican, explicitly put the race in terms of control of Congress, and still lost big in more liberal Montgomery County. Who knows how the individual races played out. The fact remains, we had a narrow majority, we retain a narrow majority. Any serious backlash would have lost us the Congress.

The fact the Hillary had to fight hard against a virtual unknown is significant. Guiliani would have been a far more formidable opponent. Similarly, Gore has the heftier resume, and comes from an administration widely perceived as successful. Why do you suppose he is in his current predicament? Should he have been mopping the floor with Bush?

The fact that Clinton won the battle to retain office has nothing to do with backlash. Backlash means that the Republicans indisputably suffer for the impeachment. They have not........
