Nadine, the thing that would be the most revealing of all would be if the absentees were counted and Gore gained 301 votes on Bush. Bush has gambled that it won't happen, and I don't think it will either, but if it did, the contrite GOP would come out kneading their hats in their hands, bowed heads, and say, you know, the DEMs are right, we really better do a manual recount, just to be sure everyone's vote counted. We wouldn't want to short change democracy! Viva la recount!
The "evidence" that I've heard that the butterfly ballot is fine is that there were 16000 errors in the last presidential election (on the presidential vote page). Of course, this is for moron consumption only. That's kind of like taking your new car in because it burns oil, and the dealer says not to worry, it was burning oil when you bought it. <g>
The other "evidence" offered up is that the Libertarians had something like 110% more registered voters than in the prior election. The missing fact is that the total numbers are tiny -- I only saw them one time, on the day after the election, but it was something like 300. The GOP certainly doesn't want to throw around those big numbers, or compare them to another county (say, the one which got 2nd most), so that people see through the smoke screen. Unless, of course, they suddenly they picked up 1200% more supporters that night. Must have been a good ad! |
