Electronic voting is much more likely to occur before Internet voting because a system can be designed that requires you to enter votes in a booth, but the memory system retains the votes. It also can be simply programmed to prevent you from selecting two candidates, etc., like any decent software. Unfortunately, this current election fiasco will probably spawn some internal government electronic booth project that will cost $100 million and never work. Then some state will get a system to work by downloading freeware that does work.

Intermediate results can be transmitted from the precincts directly to the state headquarters (like they are doing in Seattle now with scanned ballots), and the CDROMs come in later for verification.
