I stand corrected - and thanks for the education. I've got to say that in terms of technical issues, this thread has been an invaluable learning tool. A year ago I had no idea of how CPUs were manufacturered or constructed, and now my friends who I've recommended AMD as an investment to eyes glaze over and stare at me like some space alien when I rattle on about wafer starts, die sizes, yields, pipeline depth, etc. :-)
I am curious about your thoughts on the future place of video cards - my impression is that currently, one could say the market is segmented into high end (e.g., Nvidia Geforce2 64mb DDR), middle (e.g., Nvidia MX series), and low end (integrated graphics chipsets). I think those folks that buy the cheapo boxes with the integrated chipsets tend to be the least knowledgable, as they think they can play games well with such a rig and often the integrated graphics aren't up to the task, at least in terms of how computer games are capable of looking these days. My question is about how you see the future - will the trend be towards better, much more competent integrated graphics, or will add-in cards continue to be a growing market, and thus the current segmentation will be viable model for years to come. Obviously, companies like NVDA (which I used to own) think the latter, I would guess. What's your thoughts? TIA. |
