Well, here's one response to essentially the same question posted on QCOM thread. Of course, if we look beyond India, there must be places where cost of backbone is prohibitive, and the WLL / G* combo might make sense. Any other thoughts?

India is a small and very dense country. I don't expect the cost of running the backbone would be very much compared to the daunting task of running wires to every dwelling. WLL is a natural, Globalstar is too expensive for mass deployment in India and I doubt it could handle the volume of traffic anticipated for the WLL system.
