Ben,
It would be too funny for words if Gore won the absentee ballot vote by 300+ votes. It would be the supreme irony.

Any impartial observer of Palm Beach County, using either common-sense or statistical methods, can see that Gore lost thousands of votes due to the bad ballot design. Some of the more mathematically inclined posters on the Ask Michael Burke thread have posted links to statistical papers that show that Palm Beach County is an extreme outlier.

Even leaving Palm Beach County aside, it's going to be interesting in the next few days, when Harris will probably certify Bush the winner by 300 votes more or less, and the recount begins to produce unofficial numbers showing that Gore won by a few hundred or thousand votes. Actual numbers seem to have a powerful influence over the public mind, even if they are only statistical artifacts.

How do you think two competing totals will play in the court of public opinion?
