Interesting post about the Pent 4 processor.
Is there anywhere one can find, in language simple enough for humans to understand, what the features, strengths, weaknesses, design limitations, and problems are solved with the various processors.
In the old days, things were simpler: 4-bit, 8-bit, 16-bit, 32 address lines, FPU, cache, ... Today, we're expected to buy pig-in-a-poke improvements, plus a little higher clock.
Also, are there any design considerations that Microsoft would like to see implemented to make Windows systems better that were omitted? I know these are tough questions, but if anyone understands this area enough themselves, or knows any URL which explains it, I'd appreciate the help.

I know 'Pentium' was to replace 586 for copyright reasons, but 'Sexium', 'Septium', and 'Octium', were dropped in favour of Pentium II, III, and IV. (Or is it 4?) I would've enjoyed a system with a Sexium more than my Pentium II. (Actually, I'd like to have a 586, 686, and 786) |
