... an earth coupled heat pump which extracts about 4.25 watts of heat out of the ground... Now I know why my feet get so cold. Kidding aside, you have a valid point about using finite resources that have no substitute for uses that valid renewable substitutes exist within easy grasp. When we've exhausted petroleum supplies 'heating the garage', and we are unable to manufacture pharmacuticals, fertilizers, plastics of all types, rubber, lubricants, and the many other petroleum based goods we have become accustomed to consuming, future generations will look back and realize what a massive failure took place on our watch.
