For some time now there has been talk of Hawaii seceding from the US. However, they are in the Gore camp and it is unrelated to elections. Alaska also is unhappy because the Feds are always trying to run the show there and gobble up more state land.

My own state of Wisconsin had secession referendums in the northern third of the counties, in the early 80's I believe. Many people up there were unhappy with how the state capitol Madison ignored them. One third voted for consideration of secession which may have lead to the formation of the 51st state (Superior) had there been more sentiment for the idea.

So I don't rule out anything. Of course sectionalism seems to be at a fairly low level right now, so it does seem an unlikely occurrance, at least for the contiguous states.
