*OT*With all due respect, you seem to be missing the point in several areas, Joe.
I never said it was "great journalism" nor did I say it was fair or unbiased. I said it was a "great opinion/editorial piece" and that is something far different from what you are decrying. Op Ed pieces by definition are opinions and few, if any, don't reflect the writer's philosophy, standards, morals...biases. Cool your jets.
Your tendency to make assumptions for me regarding Republicans in general (and Nixon in particular) is also unsubstantiated, unwarranted and....unnecessary! In previous conversations with you on this thread I believe I have shown a significant amount of evenhandedness with regards to political parties (my references to both Gore and Bush being guilty of much of the same and my general references to liberal politicians and an increasing number of conservative ones...remember?).
And for your further information, I believed it was right and proper for Mr. Nixon to resign; he should have done it sooner. I also believe Mr. Clinton should have resigned. I admired the intellectual honesty of McGovern, Goldwater, Carter, Nader, Browne and others even while disagreeing with some or all of their policies. I deplored the backroom strongarm tactics of Nixon, Rockefeller, LBJ, and the Kennedys while agreeing with some or all of theirs.
My interest is in arguments defined with a purpose and substantiated with some measure of rational logic, common sense and facts. And since the Gore/Daley/Christopher/Boies regime have issued forth a larger quantity of nonsense (so far) than the corresponding Bush gang, it's becoming increasingly hard NOT to sound partisan or biased even while trying to maintain objectivity. I fully admit this.
I do agree with you that many, if not most, people just want "their guy" to win. I think that's wrong and I've said as much repeatedly. Our Founding Fathers thought so, too, and that is why they labored to give us a representative republic with a strong Constitution and not a democracy.
Btw, there are plenty of "facts" to substantiate many of Ms. Noonan's assertions. Whether they amount to "stealing the election" is certainly open to debate.
Nice hearing from you again--MK-- |
