<<Victor, if you were a telecom trying to draw new high end customers from around the globe, would you put big money into a patched together system, or would you build a state of the art next generation optical network, that runs circles around any other system on the face of the earth? >>

Shaw, if they have unlimited $$ and no roi deadlines, I suppose they would scrap what they have and build a state of the art, next generation optical network. But isn't that what wcom already did? Appparently it hasn't been quite good enough.

Look, there are major corporations that are still running their entire operations on ATM networks, and they are remaining committed to them.

The carrier and isp's cannot go down the .com bus model road- that ain't making it anymore. I do believe that VoIP is going to a big beneficiary of optical, and it's going to be huge once more optical is in place. But there again, VoIP is being driven by cost competition, not by sex-appeal among customers. The telecoms are desparate to drive their op costs ever lower. Pretty soon THEY will be paing US to make our calls on their lines.
