"If that democratic widow takes the senate seat her husband was running for she will replace a republican senator. I can't remember the state. Gore will be VP and Lieberman will still be a senator during the entire month of Dec. even they win the election. The senate will have 50 dems and 50 reps. during this period."

The State is Missouri; the widow is Jean Carnahan. Her late husband, Mel, was Governor of Missouri and not a US Senator, though he was a candidate for US Senate at the time he died in a plane crash. The Senate seat is held by Republican John Ashcraft, and will be held by him until the end of his term. The new Governor of Missouri has said he will appoint Jean Carnahan to the seat won by her husband. Of course, she won't take office until the new Congress is sworn in. Thus -- 51 Republicans, 49 Democrats, until next year.

Please no partisan flames. Just trying to provide information here -:)
