PW, mark, and Gottfried: Thanks for the responses. I searched for WINWORD.EXE and nothing came up. I found some documents stored in word and clicked on them and got a Window Installer box that said it was "preparing to install". Then that failed. The same happened when I went to program, ms word and clicked. I do have a Compaq machine , Gottfried. The only Microsoft disk I could find was a Windows 98 CD-ROM setup Boot disk. Doesn't sound like it would help, right? Also, my friend did use a set-up disk to get my computer going again. By the way, I do have the Norton 2000 rescue disks. Would they help. Myron
