Gore Is Not Stealing The Election, But Bush Is Trying Too. "To steal" the election means not to ount the votes that were cast on November 7th or voted by absentee on that date. If you don't count the votes that were cast then you can't know the "will of the voters." It is known that 10000 ballots in Palm Beach County were reported by machine count not to have selected a presidential candidate (CNN). That is virtually certain to be machine error. Voters voting in Presidential elections invariably vote for a candidate for President. Someone has to look at those 10000 ballots and see why the machine did not count them. It is the only reliable check. Everyone knows that machine counting of THESE TYPE OF BALLOTS results in significant error rates that will affect the outcome of close elections.
Hand counts of closely contested elections are performed in virtually all states including Texas. To protect against fraud or error in Florida, there are Republican observers to observe each ballot being counted. If an observer objects to a ballot, the ballot is immediately set aside for consideration by several different levels of observers including a lawyer for Bush.
Baker and Bush have been highly irresponsible in claiming that hand counting will cheat Bush. It's a lie. And it has polarized the electorate. Bush signed a hand counting bill into law in Texas as the means to determine the winner in very close election.
I repeat not a single ballot in Florida can be placed in the Gore column by a vote counter over the objection of a Republican observer. If a ballot is objected to, the ballot must be set aside for further review by both Democrats and Republicans, and ultimately by a Court if the winner of that ballot cannot be resolved by the Canvassing Board.
I understand that Republicans are angry that hand counts are only occurring in Democratic counties. That is happening because Gore asked for hand recounts and Bush did not. However, Gore has said repeatedly that he has no objection to hand counts in Republican counties, especially where large numbers of votes were reportedly voided. I have no objection either. Count all the damn ballots by hand. That's the right way to do it.
THE REPUBLICANS SHOULD STOP LYING TO THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES. LYING ABOUT HAND RECOUNTING AND ACCUSING VOTE COUNTERS OF FRAUD IS A LOUSY WAY TO BEGIN A PRESIDENCY. Bush should be saying, "While I object to a hand count as unnecessary, we have observers checking every ballot to ensure that no ballot is incorrectly counted for Al Gore. I TRUST THE PEOPLE and do not believe that the vote counters will actively try to cheat in favor of Al Gore or me." That is what he should be saying.
DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT THE PEOPLE COUNTING THE BALLOTS AND OBSERVING THE COUNTING ARE TRYING TO CHEAT YOU? That's nonsense. The real theft of this election will be if human beings do not count the ballots and a candidate is elected because of machine error. NOW THAT WOULD BE STUPID. People have eyes, hands and a brain. Machines do not. Baker's argument is stupid and ridiculous, and he is Bush's spokesperson. Bush should never have allowed Baker to make such dishonest and patently stupid claims about machine counting versus manual counting. It's a very, very bad start for this man who would be President.
