CB--Perhaps the statistical analysis was done not to determine the outcome but rather to determine how to measure the outcome.

A print reporter was on MSNBC citing a close election in MA, where believe it or not, a Republican actually won.
The judge himself literally reviewed a sample of the ballots, which were punch card type also. Based on his review, he devised the methodology to do the full hand count. The Republican ended up winning and the loser said that the process was indeed fair.
