Nice response Mark. I still find your evenhandedness to be missing in action. You are right about the op-ed nature of the piece, but I still feel that her aim was to make us feel that the Republicans were being victimized by the ferocious Democrats. I thought that this argument was very suspect. If it is true, then what does that say about the Republican leadership anyway? I see so much nonsense coming out of each side and it has nothing to do with proving the issue of fairness. It is just to sway opinions so that their candidate can win. I think and hope that it is basically all over now. Efforts by Gore will seem more and more desparate unless he really finds some kind of smoking gun. I wish everyone had just waited for this morning before they started opening their mouths. Any efforts by Gore to uncover any possibility of unfairness was fair and reasonable. Any shrill tone on his part or any dismissal of reasonable efforts on his part by Bush's side has been irresponsible. Neither side has made any effort to make this as easy as possible for the American people. Let's see if everyone acts like grownups now. That means we don't talk about thievery and partisan name calling falls to the wayside.

BTW, you often cite the existence of facts, but it seems like it is too much trouble to post them. Like the facts about the degradation of our nation. I think that if you examine the facts, you will find that crime is back to the historical levels of 30 years ago, even teenage crime is close. Teenage pregnancy is near or lower than historical levels. Abortion rates among teens is down and those rates are way down amongst adults. The college population is growing. I would be happy to supply links to pertinent databases if you are interested in the incredible progress we have made in those areas, particularly in the last ten years. I think that we should give credit to the leadership in Congress, the White House, the Courts and the State legislatures for these huge gains. Maybe credit should go to our business leaders and civic leaders as well. This complaining about the horrible state of things reminds me too much of liberal friends of mine 20 years ago who complained that they would never bring a baby into such a screwed up world.
Regards,
Joe
