Don't forget Clare Boothe Luce, who was a Republican "Congressman" (her term) before New York became a magnet for those who prefer subsidies to work. She was hardly a conventional person. She derided Henry Wallace's concept of American "freedom of the skies" in post-WW II Europe as "globaloney". The term is rather apt, I think, for describing Mr. Gore's foreign policy.

The Republican Party has lost much of its motive force in the last 50 years. We need to restore it as the party of individual freedom, anti-conformism, and small government. JMHO
