Yes, I believe you are right about Jefferson, but what in the world does that have to do with this situation. And I don't remember when Jefferson made that statement; I would guess as Governor of Virginia or before; not as US president. I differ with you about the "glorious" spin that you put on the early Republican party; the party we know today took structure under Grant; a party of the northern "robberbarrons" and those who benefitted from the civil war.
